Why do we use Adobe Acrobat?
Adobe Acrobat is an electronic publishing format. It's strength is being able to display a document in precisely the format in which it was created - regardless of whether or not you have the software package that was used to create it. In addition, you can print complex, formatted pages from an Acrobat document and have them look exactly the same as if they were professionally published (minus the glossy paper of course).
We use it because it is the only way that we can ensure the integrity and formatting of traditionally published information that we provide in electronic format. For example, if we published the material in Microsoft Word format, we can not assume that you will have that word processor or the same version that we used.
In addition, Acrobat files are small, typically half the size of an equivalent Microsoft Word file, and therefore load more quickly from the Internet.
Does it cost money to use Acrobat?
The "Reader" is free and this is the bit that you need in order to read our files. In order for Adobe (the creators of Acrobat) to get people to use the format, they decided that if they gave the "reader" away free, then this would provide an additional incentive for people to create files in it. Note that the "creator" software does cost money but you don't require that for viewing our files.
Are The Aged Care Standards and Accreditation Agency Ltd the only people that use Adobe Acrobat?
Absolutely not. Acrobat is becoming the defacto standard for publishing documents with sophisticated formatting on the web. You will come across it more and more often. For example, almost all company annual reports are published on the Internet in Adobe Acrobat format. Many other types of reports are published in Adobe Acrobat such as Stockbroking, Information, etc.
What's the process for installing Adobe Acrobat?
Firstly, you need to get your hands on the software.
Then you need to install the software by clicking on the filename and answering any questions that are asked.
Once you've done that, it may ask you to re-boot your system (shut it down and then turn it back on again).
Then you will have a new program option (called Adobe Reader) and when you click on an Acrobat link in your web browser, it will automatically load the reader from within your browser window.
