Tools
How can the Agency’s tools help?
The Agency has produced various tools which can assist residential aged care homes in monitoring their systems, and therefore the level of care and services provided to residents. These can be used to create monitoring tools such as audits and checklists, and help staff at residential aged care homes better understand the Agency’s processes.
What are the tools?
The tools include:
What is the Audit handbook?
This Audit handbook provides information to assessors and residential aged care homes on the Agency’s audit methodology. It includes information on the context and objectives of assessments, principles underlying assessment activity, methodologies and techniques to be applied in assessing and guidelines for reaching conclusions and recommendations from assessments.
It can be used by residential aged care homes to better familiarise themselves with Agency processes, and to consider improving their own practices when conducting their own monitoring activities.
Although the Agency’s audit methodology has not changed, we have improved this handbook to ensure information is easier to find, and to better facilitate the work undertaken by assessors. This has included the following:
- information on using an interpreter
- aligning information with our website fact sheets
- simplifying information relating to continuous improvement processes
- improving the index to make information easier to find.

What is the Results and processes guide?
The Results and processes guide is used to assist assessors and residential aged care homes in identifying and considering results and processes for expected outcomes in order to assess compliance with the Accreditation Standards.
The Results and processes guide has been updated to reflect the reviews conducted by the Agency on research, legislation and other materials. Due to the various legislation changes, we have also included increased information from the aged care principles including excerpts from the Accountability Principles 1998 and Records Principles 1997.

What are the Assessment modules?
Assessment modules are an adjunct to the Results and processes guide. They are a tool to assist assessors to focus on the key systems and processes of residential aged care homes that ensure the provision of quality care and services for residents. They too can be used by residential aged care homes to assess their own systems.
The Assessment modules have been improved to align with changes to the Results and processes guide. As a result of feedback from assessors and observation visits, the modules have also been enhanced to include more information on the sorts of evidence to review. The layout has been improved to make them easier to use.
Earlier this year we introduced module 13 which uses resident interviews as a means of directing enquiry about the Accreditation Standards. Recently we also released module 14 which uses management, supply and maintenance systems as a means of directing enquiry about the Accreditation Systems. More assessment modules may be released in the future.
