Personal best

Bupa Bellarine has implemented the initiative from Bupa Care Services called Personal Best and replaces a traditional format for staff appraisal.

All employees are trained in personal best and are on their journey to becoming a Bupa legend or maintaining legend status.

Personal Best

  • provides a personalized and positive resident/family experience of aged care
  • encourages a culture of thank yous
  • rewards the staff for the amazing things they do for residents
  • assists staff to develop the skills and attitudes needed for a person centred approach to care
  • is the staff appraisal system.

The Personal Best program provides staff with the opportunity to progress from bronze to silver to gold levels of attainment through customer commitments, before finally becoming known as a Bupa legend.

The Personal Best program is monitored by recording of staff progress through bronze, silver and gold levels and maintaining of Bupa legend status. Bupa provides, on the intranet, a program that does this monitoring and the GM reviews this on a regular basis - where staff may not progressing as expected, a meeting with the staff member is organised and assistance is provided.

Staff are rewarded with a bonus each quarter for achieving and maintaining legend status. Where legend status is maintained over the year staff are eligible to enter the draw for a holiday of a lifetime.

The personal best program has enhanced the quality of life of residents in many ways, as the majority of staff commitments are person centered. Through their commitments staff are able to make a difference in the life of a resident.

For example, many staff have committed to making a resident life board. The board is a creative way of telling the resident’s story and enables staff acknowledgement of the uniqueness of each resident's story.

Personal best has helped reinforce a culture of saying and recording thank yous. In a six month period before the introduction of Personal Best from January to June 2009, 10 thank yous were logged but in the period January to June 2010, 97 thank yous were logged.
