Give them something to laugh about

Laughter is a unique human activity with proven benefits for the mind and body. It can reduce stress, boost the immune system, and simply makes you feel good ? great news for the 150,000 older people in aged care facilities across Australia looking for a laugh!

“Laughter lady” Janni Goss, will speak about the benefits of laughter for older people at the Better Practice event being held in Perth from 18-19 November, organised by The Aged Care Standards and Accreditation Agency Ltd. The event aims to highlight the positive work being done in aged care facilities across Australia to provide a high quality of life for our older people.

Ms Goss, a physiotherapist and educator, would like to lift the profile of laughter and highlight its benefits particularly for older people. “There are many circumstances within the aged care community which contribute to seriousness. The older person may experience loss of many kinds, declining abilities, increasing dependence and change,” she said.

“Let us celebrate laughter and share the benefits!” she said.

Janni Goss will be speaking on day one of the conference on “The laugh frontier”.

Other speakers will talk about new demands in aged care including successful ageing, corporate governance, managing dementia, providing a quality lifestyle, creating a positive workplace culture and using new technology.

The Perth seminar is one of six this year being held in Australian capital cities to promote the achievements of some of the better-performing aged care homes, and to highlight the positive work being done for our elderly Australians in care.
