Better Practice in Aged Care - Tasmania 2005

The best examples of aged care will be on show at a seminar in Launceston on 17 June.

The Aged Care Standards and Accreditation Agency Ltd will host this event as one of a series of Better Practice events around Australia which will assist nursing home staff to improve the quality of care they provide to older Australians.

More than 1,500 staff from aged care homes including CEOs, senior management and nurses are expected to attend.

“The events provide a dynamic forum to share innovations and practical ideas,” said Chief Executive Officer of the Agency, Mr Mark Brandon.

“It is an opportunity to learn from speakers who have shared similar experiences, and made improvements and have a chance to exchange ideas with them,” he said.

All facets of aged care will be covered in the sessions with topics including ethical issues in aged care, nurturing the spirit, managing difficult behaviour, dementia, information management and much more.

One of the speakers in Launceston will be Peter Aitchison from a South Australian regional aged care hostel at Moonta, who several years ago faced a poor accreditation report on the home, then an amalgamation with a nearby home. During the last 12 months he has helped lead a change, building teamwork resulting in recognition as industry leaders, with happier residents, committed staff and families involved.

Other speakers include:
Pat Baines, an art therapist from Alzheimer’s Tasmania
Jill Draayers from Mt St Vincent Home about making work fun
Naree Crane from The Gardens, talking about a chicken feed approach to falls prevention.

The first Better Practice event was held in Adelaide on 19 and 20 May.
The other events are being held on:
17 June Launceston, Tasmania
21 & 22 July, Sydney, New South Wales
26 & 26 August, Melbourne, Victoria
29 & 30 September, Brisbane, Queensland
10 & 11 November, Perth, Western Australia.
